“To get gold medals at athletic level, you need gold medal coaching support.”
His praise was pointing to Robin Williams their “gold medal coach.”
Helen Glover and Heather Stanning delivered Britain’s first gold medal with a commanding performance in the 2000m women’s pairs Not only was it the first-ever gold medal won by a British women’s crew at the Olympic Games it was also Team GB’s first gold at the London Olympics 2012. At last!
What is incredible about this story of success is that Helen Glover has only been rowing for four years after starting through the Sporting Giants scheme, which was set up by UK Sport to identify British sporting talent with a view to London 2012. In those 4 years she has developed the skills to win a gold medal. Now that is awesome!
As a footnote I read a remarkably passionate article with the most amazing photographs telling an emotional story of this victory. Check it out in the Daily Mail.
My message today is why would such amazing athletes still need a coach? It’s because coaches see things the athlete doesn’t see. No matter how well trained people are, few can sustain their best performance on their own. That’s where coaching comes in.”
At the end of the day, it’s all about the mind. You can overcome a lot of physical challenges by just training but unless you develop the mind set for what you want to achieve, you’ll never be the very best. It’s your mental management that makes the difference. In sports this difference could be between winning a gold medal or not.
